How Is Turkish Citizenship Acquired?
Besides acquisition by birth, the routes to acquiring Turkish citizenship later in life are set out in the Turkish Citizenship Law No. 5901. In practice, the most common routes are:
- General route: Foreigners who have resided in Turkey for five uninterrupted years and meet the other statutory conditions may apply.
- Marriage route: Foreigners married to a Turkish citizen for at least three years, with the marriage continuing as a genuine family unit, may apply.
- Exceptional (investment) citizenship: Citizenship can be acquired through qualifying real estate purchases, fixed capital investment, bank deposits or employment creation. Thresholds and conditions are updated periodically, so current legislation must be verified before applying.
- Turquoise Card: A status granting qualified foreigners indefinite work and residence rights, with advantages on the path to citizenship.

A Rejection Is Not the Final Word
Rejections are common in citizenship and permit applications, due to missing documents, miscalculated residence periods or unexplained assessments. A rejection is an administrative act and can be challenged before the administrative courts. Time limits are short: an action must be filed within 60 days of notification of the decision.
Why Process Management Matters
Citizenship and permit files sit at the intersection of several authorities, the Directorate of Migration Management, civil registry offices, the Ministry of Labour, land registries and banks. Preparing documents in the right order and with the right content can shorten the process by months, while a single missing document can restart the file. For our foreign clients we manage the process end to end, from apostille and translation to application follow-up.
Important: Thresholds and eligibility conditions in citizenship by investment are updated through legislative changes. Verifying the current conditions before committing to an investment protects you from costly mistakes.
